How to Support Someone Who Stutters
For some people who stutter, speaking can be an immense struggle filled with anxiety and frustration. As friends, parents, teachers, and loved ones, the way we interact with a child who stutters can make a huge difference in helping them develop positive attitudes about communication and talking. The way we interact with an adolescent or adult who stutters can impact our relationship with them as well. Here are some tips:
DO:
✅ Listen patiently without interrupting
✅ Make eye contact and give your full attention
✅ Ask open-ended questions, or comment instead to reduce pressure
✅ Model slow, relaxed speech yourself
✅ Focus on what they are saying, not how they're saying it
DON'T:
❌ Finish their words or sentences for them
❌ Instruct them to "slow down," "take a breath," or "relax"
❌ Call extra attention to their stuttering
❌ Show signs of impatience or frustration
❌ Make hurtful comments or jokes about their stuttering
The key is creating a supportive environment where the person feels comfortable speaking at their own pace without fear or judgment.
