What is speech therapy and who can benefit from it?

Improving communication skills related to speech, language, voice, fluency, and social skills. It can benefit people of all ages who experience difficulties in areas such as articulation, language expression/comprehension, stuttering, apraxia, and hearing loss. We work with children as well as adults.

What happens during a speech therapy evaluation/session?

After discussing your concerns, the evaluation involves assessing abilities through standardized testing, observations, and interview. The Speech Language Pathologist will develop a treatment plan that meets your needs. Each session will start with listening to any updates or concerns you have, and then addressing your individual goals through evidence-based strategies. Therapy activities are always functional, so for children they will often involve play and parent coaching. For older children and adults, we may include books, games, or school or work materials.

How long does speech therapy last?

Since each treatment plan is individualized and each client's progress is different, there is no set amount of time. However, you will typically be sent with a home program or practice and completing these activities should increase progress.

What causes speech/language delays or disorders in children?

Each delay or disorder is unique. Some have a clear cause such as hearing loss, neurological disorders, physical impairments like cleft lip/palate, genetic syndromes such as down syndrome, or trauma/injury. In many cases, no single cause can be identified. However, research has shown that early intervention is crucial in building communication skills.
